What is MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)? What are its advantages and disadvantages?
The full name of MDF is medium-density fiberboard. Notice how similar it is to the name of density board? This is because density board can be divided into low-density fiberboard, medium-density fiberboard, and high-density fiberboard, so MDF is a type of density board. MDF accounts for a relatively high proportion of density board, so people in the industry equate MDF with density board.

MDF Introduction
MDF stands for medium-density fiberboard. Notice how similar its name is to density board? This is because density board can be divided into low-density fiberboard, medium-density fiberboard, and high-density fiberboard, so MDF is a type of density board. MDF accounts for a relatively high proportion of density board, so those in the industry often equate MDF with density board.
MDF is made from wood fibers or other plant fibers. It's made through a process of thermal grinding, drying, gluing, laying, hot pressing, post-processing, and sanding, creating an environmentally friendly building material that replaces raw wood. Its main advantages are its relatively low price compared to raw wood, ease of processing, uniform material, good physical properties, and water and moisture resistance after adding substances like wax.

Advantages
1. Smooth and Flat
MDF has a smooth, flat surface, fine texture, and good decorative properties. Various paints and varnishes can be evenly applied to its surface. Veneers, adhesive paper films, decorative panels, light metal sheets, and melamine boards can also be bonded to it.
2. Easy Processing
MDF can be produced in thicknesses ranging from a few millimeters to tens of millimeters. It can replace other thicknesses of wood and timber, and has good machinability. Sawing, drilling, grooving, tenoning, sanding, and carving are easy, facilitating shaping and milling—something particleboard can't achieve. Therefore, it's more expensive than particleboard of the same grade.
3. Good Toughness
MDF has good toughness and is not easily broken at smaller thicknesses (e.g., 6mm, 3mm).
4. Environmentally Friendly Material
MDF is made from fibers, reducing the use of wood and serving as an alternative to wood, lowering wood consumption.
Disadvantages
1. Expands When Wet
MDF has poor moisture resistance and has a large expansion coefficient after absorbing water. Therefore, it is important to paint the surface of the MDF to prevent deformation.
2. Poor Nail-Holding Power
The interior of MDF is a powdery structure, resulting in poor nail-holding power; screws tend to loosen after tightening.

According to national standards, the formaldehyde release of E1 grade MDF is ≤0.124mg/m³, suitable for interior decoration. Zhiguang Furniture uses high-quality, environmentally friendly materials; the formaldehyde release is ≤0.05mg/m³, far exceeding the national E1 standard. Zhiguang offers a wide variety of beautifully designed, environmentally friendly, odorless MDF products. When purchasing, consumers should choose products with low formaldehyde release for better safety.
