【Popular Science】How much do you know about formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is an organic chemical compound with the chemical formula HCHO or CH₂O, also known as methanal. It is a colorless, pungent gas that is irritating to the eyes, nose, and other mucous membranes. It is readily soluble in water and ethanol. The concentration of its aqueous solution can reach up to 55%, typically 35%-40%, usually 37%, commonly known as formalin. It has reducing properties, especially in alkaline solutions, where its reducing ability is even stronger.

The Hazards of Formaldehyde

For humans, long-term inhalation of formaldehyde can cause mild symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and allergic fatigue, while more serious cases can damage the barrier of the respiratory mucosa, leading to chronic airway inflammation.

Currently, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), under the World Health Organization (WHO), has classified formaldehyde as a Group 1 carcinogen.

Sources of Formaldehyde

Where does the formaldehyde in indoor decoration mainly come from? Glue.

In the home building materials market, urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives, synthesized from formaldehyde as a raw material, are widely used in various man-made boards such as particleboard, fiberboard, and multi-layer boards.

This adhesive will slowly decompose and release formaldehyde, which is the main source of formaldehyde in indoor air.

How to Remove Formaldehyde

Ventilation Method

Opening windows for ventilation is the most direct and simple method for removing formaldehyde.

Activated Carbon Adsorption

Activated carbon has tiny pores inside, with good adsorption capacity, and can adsorb indoor odors.

Plants

Placing some green plants at home can also effectively remove odors.
